Curious about fused glass but not ready to commit to a full-day course?
These new shorter workshops have been designed as an affordable and welcoming introduction to the creative possibilities of kiln-formed glass.
Working from my peaceful garden studio in Bognor Regis, you'll spend a relaxed morning or afternoon exploring colour, texture and composition using a wide selection of Bullseye glass and handmade studio materials.
Rather then focusing heavily on technical processes or formal instruction, this workshop is about experimentation, creativity, and enjoying the process of making. Think of it a little like "fuzzy felt with glass" - playful, absorbing and surprisingly therapeutic.
Using colourful glass ofcuts, studio-made fritballs, wafers, frits, stringers and glassline paints, you will discover how simple layers and marks can transform once fired in the kiln.
At the beginning of the session, I'll demonstrate a variety of techniques and creative approaches to working with the materials including
- Layering colour and texture
- Using Frits and studio made dots, wafers and pulled murrine
- Creating movement and pattern with stringers
- Mark making with glassline paints
- Building simple fused glass compositions.
You'll then be encouraged to experiment freely and develop your own ideas in a relaxed and supportive environment.
There is no glass cutting involved in this workshop. Instead, we'll work intuitively using prepared materials and mosaic snippers, allowing you to focus entirely on colour, composition and creative play.
Depending on your ideas and pace you may create
- A small curved wave or freeform piece
- A Soap dish or shallow curve
- A hanging panel or sun catcher
- One or more decorative studies.
Your finished work will then be kiln-fired by me after the session and ready for collection a few days later (or postage can be arranged). Please note that for curved pieces such as bowls or window curves there will be an additional firing cost as these require two separate firings.
After more then 30 years working across stained glass, kiln-formed glass, casting, painting and architectural commissions, I have found that people learn best when they are encouraged to explore creatively rather then simply copy a project.
Unlike many larger workshops, I only ever teach very small groups. This allows time for conversation, individual guidance, and the freedom to develop ideas organically within a calm and welcoming studio environment.
Many students who begin with these taster workshops later return for more personalised mentoring sessions, where we can explore individual ideas, techniques and creative directions in greator depth. I'm passionate about helping people discover their own creative voice within
glass, whether they simply want a creative escape or are beginning a longer artistic journey.
