This unique stained glass panel forms part of the creative journey behind a bespoke commission created for a Victorian home in West Sussex.
 
The final commission consisted of a pair of decorative stained glass door panels featuring flowering irises and a dragonfly. Before committing to the finished design, I produced a series of test pieces to explore colour, kiln-fired painting techniques and the best methods for capturing the delicate beauty of the iris in glass.
 
The accompanying photographs document that journey, from the original flower that inspired the design, through the initial concept sketch and development process, to the completed commission installed in my client's home.
 
Glass is both beautiful and unforgiving. Careful testing allows me to refine each stage of the process before committing to a major commission. 
 
Selected development pieces are retained and finished as standalone artworks, allowing collectors to own a unique part of the creative process behind a commissioned stained glass installation. 
 
The iris at the centre of this panel has been created using layers of Bullseye glass, frits and powders before being hand painted and kiln fired. The finished piece is then set within a traditional leaded stained glass surround using richly textured antique green glass, chosen for its beautiful striations and ability to catch and reflect the light.
 
Mounted on a wooden display base with polished chrome supports, this freestanding stained glass panel is designed for display on a windowsill, shelf or mantelpiece. As the light changes throughout the day, the textured glass reveals subtle variations of colour and reflection.
